Our founder, our mother, and the heart of Raoul Textiles passed away peacefully on Sunday July 14th at her home in Santa Barbara. Sally was one of a kind. She built a beautiful world for all of us at Raoul, and her warmth and brilliance still light up our homes and yours.Sally was an extraordinary person; full of ideas and grit, she and our father Tim started Raoul in 1981 with a book on silkscreening from the library and a T-shirt screen. Her ferocious determination drove the business from a Quonset hut to an international force, and her singular genius transformed the industry around her.She was warm, generous, curious, stylish and tough as nails. Sally inspired everyone she met; her enthusiasm and creativity was expansive. She had an unwavering sense of possibility, and believed that you could (and should) do it yourself. She never lost her scrappy, handmade spirit: we spent our weekends wrangling a Vandercook proof press or learning faux-finish painting on the fly.When people asked how she began a design, she talked about the lines–she loved drawing and the elegance of her hand is unmistakable. She took inspiration from the things she loved, and she loved so many things. She had an instinct for when things were right but also how to make them right; when to increase the scale, move a motif, brighten a color; how to light up a space.We know many of you understand the joy and life a Raoul textile brings to a home. You can feel the integrity of the process, the sense of history and unique vision, the way they draw your eye and reflect the warmth and light of the room.That was Sally.With love,
